Infiniti VIN decoder
Infiniti is the luxury brand of Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. It launched in the United States in 1989 with 51 dealers and two models, the Q45 and M30. Today it sells only SUVs in the US: the QX60 and QX80 appear in the 2026 fuel economy listings, and Nissan's model-year 2027 VIN filing adds the QX65.

Infiniti's production has shifted in recent years. The QX60 and the new QX65, whose production began in April 2026, are built at Nissan's plant in Smyrna, Tennessee, while the QX80 is built in Japan by Nissan Shatai in Kyushu. The QX50 and QX55 were built at the COMPAS plant in Aguascalientes, Mexico, a joint venture with Mercedes-Benz; their production ended in November 2025 and the plant was scheduled to close at the end of May 2026.
Because Infiniti is part of Nissan, its VINs follow Nissan's layout and are filed with NHTSA by Nissan North America. Current Infinitis share WMIs with Nissan, so the make is confirmed by the full decode rather than the first three characters. NHTSA’s files hold 104 vehicle recall campaigns and 6,907 owner complaints for Infiniti vehicles from model years 1995 to 2027, summarised here on 36 model pages. The G35 has the most complaints (1,351), followed by the QX60 (582) and the QX56 (538). Of those complaints, 373 report a crash, 74 a fire, 216 at least one injury and 9 at least one death; the figures count complaints, not people.

How do you decode a current Infiniti VIN?
Nissan's layout puts the engine type in position 4, line and series in 5, the model change number in 6, the body type in 7 and the restraint system in 8. Position 9 is the check digit, 10 the model year and 11 the plant. The QX60 and QX65 share a WMI and a plant, so position 5 separates them: the 2027 filing lists L for the QX60 and C for the QX65.

Why does my Infiniti VIN start with the same code as a Nissan?
Infiniti is Nissan's luxury brand, and Nissan registers most WMIs for the manufacturing company rather than the brand. In Nissan's 2027 filing the QX60 and QX65 use 5N1, the same WMI as the Smyrna-built Nissan Pathfinder and Murano. The decoded make and positions 5 to 8 identify the vehicle as an Infiniti.
Where is the Infiniti QX80 built?
In Japan. Nissan's 2027 VIN filing lists plant code 9, Nissan Shatai Kyushu, for the QX80, with WMI JN8.
