Genesis VIN decoder
Genesis is the luxury brand of Hyundai Motor Group. Hyundai announced it as a stand-alone brand on November 4, 2015; before that, Genesis was the name of a Hyundai sedan and coupe. The 2026 US lineup consists of the G70, G80 and G90 sedans and the GV60, GV70 and GV80 SUVs, including electric versions.

Most Genesis models are built in South Korea. The exception is the GV70: Hyundai's Montgomery, Alabama plant began building the Electrified GV70 on February 21, 2023, making it the first Genesis built in the United States, and Genesis says the redesigned 2026 GV70 and Electrified GV70 are built in both Montgomery and Ulsan, South Korea. That dual sourcing is visible in the VIN, because Alabama-built and Korean-built vehicles carry different WMIs and plant codes.
Every Genesis carries a 17-character VIN, the North American standard since model year 1981. Its VIN decoding guides are filed with NHTSA by the Hyundai-Kia America Technical Center, and NHTSA's vPIC database usually decodes US-market Genesis vehicles in detail. NHTSA’s files hold 34 vehicle recall campaigns and 950 owner complaints for Genesis vehicles from model years 2005 to 2027, summarised here on 12 model pages. The GV70 has the most complaints (236), followed by the G80 (234) and the GV80 (183). Of those complaints, 68 report a crash, 5 a fire, 37 at least one injury and 1 at least one death; the figures count complaints, not people.

Which WMI codes appear on Genesis VINs?
Genesis vehicles use WMIs registered to Hyundai companies. vPIC lists KMT under the Genesis make only, while KMU, KMH and 5NM are shared with Hyundai. For model year 2017, vPIC already lists the G80 and G90 under the Genesis make rather than Hyundai.

How do you decode a Genesis GV70 VIN?
Genesis uses the Hyundai Motor Group layout. The model-year 2027 guide for the Korean-built GV70 and Electrified GV70 (NHTSA Manufacturer Information Database file ORG26371, March 2026) lists:

Because the same letter in position 5 can mean different trims on the gasoline and electric GV70, read it together with position 8. Position 9 is the check digit.
Is my Genesis GV70 built in Alabama or Korea?
Check the first character and position 11. Korean-built GV70s use WMI KMU and, in the 2027 guide, plant code U for Ulsan. Vehicles built at Hyundai's Montgomery plant carry a US WMI; vPIC lists 5NM, the Alabama plant's MPV code, with the Genesis make.
Why does my older Genesis decode as a Hyundai?
Before November 2015 Genesis was a Hyundai model name, and NHTSA's vPIC lists the Genesis sedan and Genesis Coupe from those years under the Hyundai make. Only vehicles from the separate Genesis brand decode as Genesis.
Can I check Genesis recalls with the decoder?

Does a Genesis VIN decode show ownership history?
No. It shows factory data such as line, series, body, restraints, powertrain, model year and plant. Ownership, title and accident records come from state agencies and licensed history providers, which this site does not connect to.
