VINDecoder360 is an English-language VIN decoder for vehicles built to the 17-character standard, from model year 1981 onward. We decode VINs with public data from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and our own calculations, show NHTSA recall and owner-complaint data for each make, model and year, and publish guides researched from primary sources.
What does VINDecoder360 do?
- Decodes VINs. Enter a 17-character VIN in our VIN decoder to see the manufacturer, model year, plant and whatever vehicle details the manufacturer has filed with NHTSA, such as body style, engine and safety equipment.
- Checks the VIN's structure. We calculate the check digit, read the model-year code and identify the manufacturer's region and country ourselves, so you can spot a mistyped VIN straight away.
- Shows recalls and complaints. For each make, model and year we list NHTSA recall campaigns and summarise owner complaints filed with NHTSA. Our recall lookup works the same way.
- Covers brands worldwide. Our brand directory groups North American, European and Asian makes, each with its own VIN notes.

Where does our data come from?
Every vehicle fact on the site comes from a public NHTSA source or from our own computation of the published VIN standards. We don't add, estimate or invent vehicle data: if a source has no value for a field, we say it is unavailable.

Because vPIC describes vehicles intended for the U.S. market, decodes of European-market and other non-U.S. VINs are often incomplete. Our European VIN guide explains why.
How are our guides researched and updated?
- Primary sources first. We work from the regulations themselves (49 CFR Part 565, Canada's Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations, EU type-approval law) and from government agencies such as NHTSA, the U.S. Department of Justice and Transport Canada.
- Checked against live data. Where a guide lists codes, we test them against NHTSA's public APIs; every manufacturer code in our WMI guide was verified with vPIC before publication.
- Cross-checked tables. Reference tables are compared across at least two sources, and entries the sources disagree on are left out.
- Original writing. Every guide is written from scratch in plain English. We don't copy other VIN sites.
- Sources on record. We keep a source log for every guide, noting which source supports each fact.
- Dated updates. Each guide shows the date of its last substantive update. We revise guides when the underlying rules or data change.
Found an error? Email support@vindecoder360.com with the page and, if you can, the source that shows the correct information. We will check it and correct the page if we got it wrong.
What doesn't VINDecoder360 do?
- No ownership, accident or title history, for now. That data comes from licensed providers, such as the approved NMVTIS data providers in the U.S. We don't show sample or estimated history.
- No VIN-specific recall status. NHTSA's public recall data is organised by make, model and year. To see whether a specific vehicle has an open recall, use NHTSA's VIN lookup; our VIN recall check guide explains how.
- No selling of data. We don't sell or rent the VINs you enter or any other information about you.
- No accounts, cookies or analytics. You don't need to sign up, and we don't track you across pages. Details are in our privacy policy.
- Not a government service. VINDecoder360 is an independent website. It is not operated by NHTSA or by any vehicle manufacturer.
