Acura VIN decoder
Acura is the luxury brand of Honda Motor Co., Ltd. It launched in the United States on March 27, 1986 with 60 dealers in 18 states, selling the Integra and Legend, and Acura describes itself as the first Japanese luxury brand in the US. Because Acura is part of Honda, its VINs follow Honda's structure and are filed with NHTSA by American Honda.

Three of Acura's current models are built in Ohio. Honda's 2026 North American factbook lists the Integra at Marysville and the MDX at East Liberty, which is the MDX's only plant worldwide; Acura's 2026 filings with NHTSA also place the RDX at East Liberty. The ADX is built in Celaya, Mexico, and GM's 2026 VIN standard lists the electric ZDX as a General Motors build at Spring Hill, Tennessee. Acura ended TLX production in July 2025 and has announced that 2026 RDX production will be suspended ahead of a next-generation hybrid model.

The MDX has the most complaints (3,275), followed by the TL (3,118) and the RDX (2,152). Which WMI codes appear on Acura VINs?
Acura shares Honda's manufacturing companies, so its WMIs are registered to American Honda, Honda of Canada, Honda de Mexico and Honda Motor Co. in Japan. The ZDX is the exception: vPIC lists its WMI, 4W5, under General Motors LLC.

How is an Acura VIN structured?
Honda's filings with NHTSA use the same pattern for Acura as for Honda: positions 1 to 3 are the WMI, positions 4 to 8 a five-character model code that identifies the model, trim, drive, transmission and body, position 9 the check digit, 10 the model year, 11 the plant and 12 to 17 the serial number.

Is an Acura VIN decoded the same way as a Honda VIN?
Yes. American Honda files Acura and Honda VIN information with NHTSA in the same format, with a five-character model code in positions 4 to 8. The WMI and the model code are what identify the vehicle as an Acura.
Why does my Acura ZDX VIN start with 4W5?
The ZDX is built by General Motors at Spring Hill, Tennessee, so its VIN is defined in GM's VIN standard rather than Honda's. vPIC lists 4W5 under General Motors LLC with the Acura make, and GM's 2026 standard gives the ZDX plant code Z for Spring Hill.
