What NHTSA owner complaints mean

These figures count complaints that vehicle owners and other members of the public have submitted to NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation. NHTSA uses complaints, together with other data, to spot safety issues that may warrant an investigation and to check whether existing recalls go far enough.

  • They are reports, not findings. Each complaint is the submitter's own account. Its presence in the database does not mean NHTSA has confirmed a defect.
  • Counts are not defect rates. The data doesn't say how many vehicles were sold, so a raw count can't tell you what share of vehicles had a problem.
  • Popular models collect more complaints. A model sold in large numbers will usually gather more complaints than a rare one, simply because more people own it.
  • One complaint can name several components. Totals by component can therefore add up to more than the number of complaints.
  • Coverage starts in 1995. NHTSA's complaint file contains complaints received since January 1, 1995.

Use complaint patterns as a prompt for questions: whether a recall covers the issue, whether the vehicle you are considering has had the fix, and what a mechanic finds on inspection. For confirmed safety defects, see the recall list for this model.

Air Bags › Passenger Side Frontal › Cushion; Air Bags › Frontal

    Model years 2003, 2006–2008

Nissan North America, Inc. (INFINITI) is recalling certain 2003 INFINITI FX35, 2006-2008 FX35 and FX45 vehicles that previously received a replacement front passenger air bag assembly under recall number 20V-008. The air bag cushion was folded incorrectly, which could increase internal pressure and tear the air bag cushion during deployment.

    Consequence:
A tear in the air bag may decrease air bag performance, and increase the risk of injury.
    Remedy:
INFINITI will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag module, free of charge. The recall began on April 19, 2021. Owners may contact INFINITI customer service at 1-800-662-6200. INFINITI's number for this recall is R20C2.

The vehicles are equipped with non-desiccated, frontal passenger air bag inflators containing phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant that were used as interim remedy parts for previous Takata recalls. These inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.

    Consequence:
An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
    Remedy:
Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflators with alternate desiccated inflators, free of charge. The recall began February 12, 2020. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 888-737-9511 or Infiniti customer service at 888-810-3715.

The headlamp assemblies do not meet the headlamp photometric values requirements of the standard.

    Consequence:
This standard is to reduce traffic accidents and deaths and injuries resulting from traffic accidents, by providing adequate illumination of the roadway, and by enhancing the conspicuity of motor vehicles on the public roads so that their presence is perceived and their signals understood, both in daylight and in darkness or other conditions of reduced visibility.

    Child Seat › Latch Strap

    Model year 2005

Certain vehicles fail to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 225, "child restraint anchorage systems." The lower anchorage brackets in the rear seats do not meet the location requirement in this standard. This may cause difficulty in attaching some child seats to these brackets.

    Remedy:
Dealers will replace the lower anchorage brackets with modified brackets to ensure that the standard is met. The recall began on August 28, 2006. The Infiniti Q45 model vehicles are being campaigned under a separate recall (please see 05V374000). Owners should contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261 or Infiniti at 1-800-662-6200.

Service Brakes, Hydraulic › Foundation Components › Disc › Caliper

    Model year 2003

On certain sport utility vehicles, the front brake caliper mounting bolts may not be adequately tightened. This could result in one or both of the caliper mounting bolts loosening.

    Consequence:
If this occurs, it would allow the caliper to rotate or separate from its mounting bracket. This could cause the brake to fail, reducing the vehicle's ability to stop. It could also damage the wheel, causing the tire to go flat. Either one of these conditions could result in a crash.
    Remedy:
Dealers will tighten the front brake caliper mounting bolts to ensure that they are secure. Owner notification began on January 5, 2004. Owners should contact Infiniti at 1-800-662-6200.

Filed by Nissan North America, Inc.

    Power Train › Automatic Transmission

    Model year 2003

On certain sport utility vehicles, the bolts which attach the propeller shaft(s) to the transaxle and differential(s) may not have been adequately tightened.

    Consequence:
If the bolts come loose, the propeller shaft may come off the vehicle which could result in a crash.
    Remedy:
Dealers will replace the propeller shaft bolts and tighten the bolts to the proper specification. Owner notification began May 27, 2003. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Infiniti at 1-800-662-6200.

How to read this recall list

This list shows every safety recall campaign NHTSA has on file for this make, model and model year. It is not specific to one vehicle: a recall often covers only vehicles built in a certain date range or with a certain part, and many of the vehicles it covers will already have been repaired.

What each recall field means
What each recall field means
FieldWhat it tells you
Campaign numberNHTSA's unique ID for the recall, such as 20V771000. Quote it to a dealer or when searching NHTSA's site.
ComponentThe system or part involved, for example air bags, brakes or electrical software.
SummaryWhat the defect or non-compliance is and which vehicles are covered.
ConsequenceThe safety risk if the problem isn't fixed.
RemedyWhat the manufacturer will do, such as a repair, replacement or software update, and whether it is free.
  • Some recalls carry an NHTSA consumer advisory, “Do Not Drive” or “Park Outside”. Follow it until the repair is done.
  • A single campaign often covers several models or model years, so the same campaign number can appear in more than one list.
  • Recalls are shown as NHTSA publishes them. Very recent campaigns may take time to appear.

NHTSA lists 13 vehicle recall campaigns for the Infiniti FX35, covering model years 2002 to 2013. The most recent, 21V139000, was reported on March 4, 2021 and is filed under “Air bags”. The 2003 model year is covered by the most campaigns (10).

Which Infiniti FX35 model year has the most complaints?

The 2004 model year, with 120 of the 447 complaints in NHTSA’s file (26.8%). The next are 2005 (94) and 2003 (61). Complaint counts also reflect how many vehicles of each year were sold and how long they have been on the road, so they are not a reliability ranking.

Does every recall on this page apply to my Infiniti FX35?

Not necessarily. Each campaign lists specific model years, and many cover only vehicles built in a certain period or fitted with a certain part; repairs already carried out aren’t shown. To see whether a recall is open on your vehicle, enter its VIN at NHTSA’s recall lookup (opens in a new tab) or ask a Infiniti dealer.

How many Infiniti FX35 complaints report a crash, fire, injury or death?

Of the 447 complaints, 16 report a crash, 3 a fire, 15 at least one injury and 1 at least one death. These figures count complaints, not people, and each complaint is the submitter’s own unverified account.
