The HUMMER EV is sold as a GMC, not under a separate Hummer brand, so a new HUMMER EV decodes with GMC as the make. It is built at GM's Factory Zero in Detroit-Hamtramck alongside the Sierra EV. GM's model-year 2026 VIN standard places the Sierra at Fort Wayne Assembly in Indiana, Silao in Mexico and Oshawa in Canada, the Sierra HD at Flint, Michigan, the Yukon at Arlington, Texas, the Acadia at Lansing Delta Township, Michigan, and the Terrain at San Luis Potosi, Mexico. Many GMC models share these plants with their Chevrolet counterparts.
Every GMC from model year 1981 onward carries a 17-character VIN in the format NHTSA requires. For trucks and SUVs built for North America, NHTSA's vPIC database usually decodes the GVWR class, cab or body style, engine and plant. GMC shares GM's VIN rules with Chevrolet, Buick and Cadillac; older H2 and H3 models are covered on the Hummer page.
NHTSA’s files hold 434 vehicle recall campaigns and 44,316 owner complaints for GMC vehicles from model years 1995 to 2026, summarised here on 102 model pages. The Sierra 1500 has the most complaints (8,852), followed by the Acadia (5,557) and the Yukon (4,874). Of those complaints, 2,089 report a crash, 626 a fire, 1,326 at least one injury and 45 at least one death; the figures count complaints, not people.
The World Manufacturer Identifier is the first three characters of the VIN. NHTSA’s vPIC database decodes 22 WMIs to GMC; this is the complete list, with the manufacturer name, country and vehicle type vPIC records for each.

How does a GMC VIN differ from a Chevrolet VIN?
The difference is in the third character of the WMI. In GM's 2026 standard, T marks a GMC truck, K a GMC MPV, D an incomplete GMC and J a GMC bus, while Chevrolet uses C, N, B and A for the same types. A Sierra built in Fort Wayne therefore starts with 1GT, and a Silverado from the same plant with 1GC.
| WMI | Manufacturer (NHTSA vPIC) | Country | Vehicle type |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1GT | GENERAL MOTORS LLC | United States | Truck |
| 2GT | GENERAL MOTORS LLC | Canada | Truck |
| 3GT | GENERAL MOTORS LLC | Mexico | Truck |
| 1GK | GENERAL MOTORS LLC | United States | MPV (SUV) |
| 3GK | GENERAL MOTORS LLC | Mexico | MPV (SUV) |
| 1GD | GENERAL MOTORS LLC | United States | Incomplete vehicle |
| 1GJ | GENERAL MOTORS LLC | United States | Bus (van) |
GMC trucks and SUVs use GM's MPV and truck layout: position 4 combines GVWR, brake system and body style, 5 is the chassis, 6 the series, 7 the restraint system and 8 the engine. See how to decode a VIN for the positions every VIN shares.
Which GMC plant codes appear in position 11?
| Model | WMI | Position 11 | Assembly plant |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sierra | 1GT | Z | Fort Wayne Assembly, Indiana |
| Sierra | 2GT | 1 | Oshawa, Ontario |
| Sierra | 3GT | G | Silao, Mexico |
| Sierra HD | 1GT | F | Flint, Michigan |
| Canyon, Savana | 1GT | 1 | Wentzville, Missouri |
| Yukon | 1GK | R | Arlington, Texas |
| Acadia | 1GK | J | Lansing Delta Township, Michigan |
| Terrain | 3GK | L | San Luis Potosi, Mexico |
| HUMMER EV Pickup, Sierra EV | 1GT | U | Factory Zero, Detroit, Michigan |
| HUMMER EV SUV | 1GK | U | Factory Zero, Detroit, Michigan |
Does a GMC HUMMER EV decode as a Hummer?
No. The HUMMER EV is a GMC model, and NHTSA's vPIC lists it under the GMC make. In GM's 2026 standard the pickup uses WMI 1GT and the SUV 1GK, both with plant code U for Factory Zero.
Is a GMC Sierra built in the same plant as a Chevrolet Silverado?
Often, yes. In GM's 2026 codes both trucks are built at Fort Wayne Assembly (Z), Oshawa (1) and Silao (G), and both heavy-duty versions at Flint (F). The WMI tells them apart: 1GT, 2GT or 3GT for GMC, 1GC, 2GC or 3GC for Chevrolet.
Can I see GMC recalls with this decoder?
The decoder lists recalls NHTSA has issued for your GMC's make, model and model year, from NHTSA's public data for US-market vehicles. To check whether a specific VIN still has an open recall, use NHTSA's VIN search or a GMC dealer. See recalls.
Does a GMC VIN decode show ownership or accident history?
No. It shows the factory data GM encoded, such as plant, model year, body and engine. Title, accident and ownership records come from state agencies and licensed history providers, which this site does not use.
