Hummer VIN decoder
Hummer started as the civilian version of AM General's military Humvee. AM General introduced the civilian HUMMER in 1992, and General Motors acquired the brand in 1999. Under GM, AM General built the H2 in Mishawaka, Indiana from 2002, and GM began building the smaller H3 at its Shreveport, Louisiana plant in April 2005.

The brand ended in 2010. A planned sale of Hummer to China's Sichuan Tengzhong collapsed in February 2010 after Chinese regulators did not approve it, and GM then said it would wind the business down. The name came back for model year 2022 as the GMC HUMMER EV, but that truck is a GMC model built at Factory Zero in Detroit-Hamtramck, so it decodes on the GMC page rather than as a Hummer.
H1, H2 and H3 models still trade on the used market, and the VIN is the quickest way to confirm which model, trim family and plant you are looking at. All of them use the 17-character VIN format required from model year 1981. Which WMI codes appear on Hummer VINs?
GM's VIN standard for the 2010 model year assigns the WMI 5GR to the Hummer H2 (built by AM General), 5GT to the H3 and 5GN to the H3 truck, the H3T pickup. NHTSA's vPIC also lists WMI 137 under AM General LLC with the makes AM General and Hummer.

How do you decode an H2 or H3 VIN?
The H2 and H3 follow GM's truck layout. In the 2010 standard, position 4 combines GVWR, brake system and body style, positions 5 and 6 give the line, chassis and series, 7 is the restraint system and 8 the engine. Position 11 is the plant: GM's table lists H for AM General in Mishawaka and 8 for Shreveport.

Is a HUMMER EV a Hummer or a GMC?
It is a GMC. The electric HUMMER EV pickup and SUV are sold under the GMC brand, NHTSA lists them under the GMC make, and GM's 2026 VIN standard gives them GMC WMIs (1GT for the pickup, 1GK for the SUV). Use the GMC decoder for them.
Who built the Hummer H2?
AM General built the H2 for GM in Mishawaka, Indiana, starting in 2002. That is why GM's 2010 VIN standard notes AM General next to the H2's WMI, 5GR, and lists plant code H for Mishawaka.
