What NHTSA owner complaints mean

These figures count complaints that vehicle owners and other members of the public have submitted to NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation. NHTSA uses complaints, together with other data, to spot safety issues that may warrant an investigation and to check whether existing recalls go far enough.

  • They are reports, not findings. Each complaint is the submitter's own account. Its presence in the database does not mean NHTSA has confirmed a defect.
  • Counts are not defect rates. The data doesn't say how many vehicles were sold, so a raw count can't tell you what share of vehicles had a problem.
  • Popular models collect more complaints. A model sold in large numbers will usually gather more complaints than a rare one, simply because more people own it.
  • One complaint can name several components. Totals by component can therefore add up to more than the number of complaints.
  • Coverage starts in 1995. NHTSA's complaint file contains complaints received since January 1, 1995.

Use complaint patterns as a prompt for questions: whether a recall covers the issue, whether the vehicle you are considering has had the fix, and what a mechanic finds on inspection. For confirmed safety defects, see the recall list for this model.

    Reported

Service Brakes, Air › Supply › Compressor

    Model year 2007

GM is recalling 1,880 model year 2007 Chevrolet Kodiak and t-series, GMC Topkick and t-series, and Isuzu f-series and h-series passenger vehicles equipped with 7.8L diesel engine. The air compressor in some of these vehicles may not build enough air pressure to support the air brake system. If this condition were to occur while the vehicles was stationary (brakes applied), the air brakes would remain applied and prevent the vehicle from moving.

    Consequence:
If the driver ignores these warnings and continues to drive the vehicle, and if there was a continued loss of pressure, the rear spring parking brakes would automatically apply, preventing the truck from being driven.
    Remedy:
Dealers will inspect the air compressor for its ability to build air pressure, and either modify the air compressor by elimination of the suppression valve or replace the air compressor assembly free of charge. The recall is expected to begin during August 2009. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438, GMC at 1-866-996-9463, Isuzu at 1-800-255-6727 or at www.gmownercenter.com.

  2. NHTSA campaign 07V190000

    Reported

Service Brakes, Air › Supply › Compressor

    Model year 2007

On certain medium duty conventional and tilt cab trucks equipped with 7.8L diesel engines and air brakes, the air compressor may not build enough air pressure to support the air brake system.

    Consequence:
If this condition were to occur while the vehicle was stationary (brakes applied) the air brakes would remain applied and prevent the vehicle from moving. If this condition were to occur while the vehicle was in motion, the dual system air pressure gauges would register the drop in pressure. If the pressure continued to drop, the low air pressure warning buzzer and warning lamp would activate as designed, warning the driver to move the vehicle to a safety location. If the driver ignores these warnings and continues to drive the vehicle, and if there was a continued loss of pressure, the rear spring parking brakes would automatically apply, preventing the truck from being driven.
    Remedy:
Dealers will replace the air compressor head. The recall began on May 23, 2007. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438, GMC at 1-866-996-9463, or Isuzu at 1-800-255-6727.

  3. NHTSA campaign 06V311000

    Reported

    Service Brakes, Air

    Model year 2006

Certain trucks fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 121, "air brake systems." An internal control and check valve within the air brake application valve assembly was configured improperly, preventing air from flowing through the brake system as designed. In the event of an emergency stop, the vehicle's stopping distance would be increased.

    Consequence:
If stopping distance was limited, a vehicle crash could result.
    Remedy:
Dealers will replace the air brake application valve assembly on c-series or reroute the air brake lines on t-series free of charge. The recall began on September 20, 2006. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438, GMC at 1-866-996-9463 and Isuzu at 1-800-255-6727.

    Filed by General Motors, LLC

  4. NHTSA campaign 06V254000

    Reported

Parking Brake › Conventional › Air

    Model year 2006

Certain medium duty trucks equipped SR-7 bendix brake valves, the check valve inside the valve cavity may not properly set, causing internal air leakage. If the check valve does not properly seat, the resulting leakage can cause a delay in the application of the spring brakes to park the vehicle after operator pulls the dash valve button.

    Consequence:
The delayed parking brake application can occur without warning, leading to unintended vehicle rollaway increasing the risk of a crash.
    Remedy:
Dealers will inspect the valves and replace it free of charge. The recall began on July 31, 2006. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438, GMC at 1-866-996-9463, or Isuzu at 1-800-255-6727.

    Filed by Isuzu Motors Limited

  5. NHTSA campaign 02V052000

    Reported

    Power Train › Clutch Assembly

    Model years 1999–2000

Certain medium duty tilt cab trucks equipped with manual transmissions have a condition in which the clutch master-cylinder pushrod end that attaches to the clutch pedal pin can wear prematurely. The first noticeable effect of this wear could be the clutch pedal not returning completely to the full-up position.

    Consequence:
If this occurs, the fast-idle engine speed control may not function. If the clutch master-cylinder pushrod end wears sufficiently to allow the attaching end to bend open or break off, the pedal pin would detach from the clutch rod link and the clutch would engage. If clutch engagement occurred while the vehicle was stopped, with the engine running and the transmission in gear, and if the brakes were not applied, the vehicle could move forward if the transmission were in a forward gear, or rearward if the transmission were in a reverse gear.
    Remedy:
Dealers will install a new clutch master-cylinder assembly and clutch pedal assembly. Owner notification began April 23, 2002. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC at 1-800-462-8782.

How to read this recall list

This list shows every safety recall campaign NHTSA has on file for this make, model and model year. It is not specific to one vehicle: a recall often covers only vehicles built in a certain date range or with a certain part, and many of the vehicles it covers will already have been repaired.

What each recall field means
What each recall field means
FieldWhat it tells you
Campaign numberNHTSA's unique ID for the recall, such as 20V771000. Quote it to a dealer or when searching NHTSA's site.
ComponentThe system or part involved, for example air bags, brakes or electrical software.
SummaryWhat the defect or non-compliance is and which vehicles are covered.
ConsequenceThe safety risk if the problem isn't fixed.
RemedyWhat the manufacturer will do, such as a repair, replacement or software update, and whether it is free.
  • Some recalls carry an NHTSA consumer advisory, “Do Not Drive” or “Park Outside”. Follow it until the repair is done.
  • A single campaign often covers several models or model years, so the same campaign number can appear in more than one list.
  • Recalls are shown as NHTSA publishes them. Very recent campaigns may take time to appear.
