Toyota VIN decoder
Toyota Motor Corporation is a Japanese maker of cars, SUVs, pickups and minivans, and the parent of the Lexus luxury brand. From 2003 to 2016 it also sold cars in the US under the Scion brand. In 2019 Toyota raised its stake in Subaru to 20 percent of the voting rights, and the two companies build some models for each other: Subaru builds the Toyota GR86, and Toyota builds the Subaru Solterra.

Toyota's press releases list a wide North American production network: Georgetown, Kentucky (Camry Hybrid, RAV4 Hybrid); Princeton, Indiana (Grand Highlander, Highlander, Sienna Hybrid and the Lexus TX); San Antonio, Texas (Tundra, Sequoia); Blue Springs, Mississippi (Corolla); Huntsville, Alabama, where the Corolla Cross is built at the Mazda Toyota Manufacturing joint venture; Woodstock and Cambridge in Ontario (RAV4); and Baja California and Guanajuato in Mexico (Tacoma). Other models are imported: Toyota's 2027 filings give the Prius and Land Cruiser the Japanese WMIs JTD and JTE.
Every Toyota from model year 1981 onward has a 17-character VIN. For vehicles built for the US and Canadian markets, NHTSA's vPIC database usually decodes the body, engine, series and plant, and Toyota files a VIN coding system with NHTSA for each model and model year.
NHTSA’s files hold 375 vehicle recall campaigns and 103,553 owner complaints for Toyota vehicles from model years 1995 to 2027, summarised here on 66 model pages. The Camry has the most complaints (16,486), followed by the Prius (12,503) and the Corolla (11,178). Of those complaints, 10,300 report a crash, 1,339 a fire, 5,646 at least one injury and 196 at least one death; the figures count complaints, not people.
The World Manufacturer Identifier is the first three characters of the VIN. NHTSA’s vPIC database decodes 31 WMIs to Toyota; this is the complete list, with the manufacturer name, country and vehicle type vPIC records for each.

How does Toyota code positions 4 to 11?
Toyota's VIN coding filings treat positions 4 to 8 as a vehicle description code covering body type, engine or motor, restraint system, series and drive. Position 9 is the check digit, 10 the model year and 11 the plant. The plant code depends on the model, as these filings show:

Some Toyotas are built by partners. The GR86 appears in Subaru's 2027 VIN filing with Subaru's WMI JF1, so check the full decode rather than assuming a Toyota WMI.
Where was my Toyota RAV4 built?
Look at the WMI and position 11. In Toyota's 2026 RAV4 filing, 4T3 with U means Georgetown, Kentucky; 2T3 with C or W means Cambridge or Woodstock, Ontario; and JTM means Japan.
Why does a Toyota GR86 VIN start with JF1?
Because Subaru builds it. Subaru's model-year 2027 filing with NHTSA covers the Toyota GR86 and assigns it WMI JF1, registered to Subaru Corporation. vPIC lists JF1 with both the Toyota and Subaru makes.
Can I look up Toyota recalls with the decoder?

Does a Toyota VIN decode show previous owners?
No. The VIN encodes factory data such as body, engine, series, model year and plant. Ownership, title and accident records come from state agencies and licensed history providers, which this site does not connect to.
