Harley-Davidson VIN decoder

Harley-Davidson, Inc. is a Milwaukee-based motorcycle maker. Its main US operations are vehicle assembly in York, Pennsylvania and powertrain production in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, with further plants in Tomahawk, Wisconsin, Manaus in Brazil and Rayong in Thailand. Its electric motorcycle business became the separately listed LiveWire Group, Inc. in September 2022, but Harley-Davidson still holds a controlling stake and consolidates it.

About Harley-Davidson VINs

Because Harley sells motorcycles built in several countries, the VIN matters for identifying where a bike came from. In its 2026 filing with NHTSA, the company lists three WMIs: 1HD for York, MLY for Thailand and LBB for motorcycles made in China by Zhejiang Qianjiang Motorcycle. In June 2026 Harley-Davidson announced that North American production of its Revolution Max models (Pan America, Sportster S and Nightster) will return to its US plants before model-year 2028 production begins.

Motorcycles follow the same 17-character VIN standard as cars from model year 1981. Harley's owner's manuals say the full VIN is stamped on the right side of the frame near the steering head, and in some markets a printed VIN label is also attached to the front downtube. NHTSA’s files hold 95 vehicle recall campaigns and 3,171 owner complaints for Harley-Davidson vehicles from model years 1995 to 2026, summarised here on 199 model pages. The FLHTCU has the most complaints (274), followed by the FLHX (184) and the FLHTK (161). Of those complaints, 216 report a crash, 48 a fire, 227 at least one injury and 20 at least one death; the figures count complaints, not people.
