Jaguar VIN decoder
Jaguar is a British luxury brand owned by Tata Motors of India since 2008, through the company that renamed itself JLR in June 2023. JLR now presents itself as a house of four brands: Range Rover, Defender, Discovery and Jaguar. Jaguar's VINs start with SAJ for passenger cars or SAD for SUVs, both registered to Jaguar Land Rover Limited.

Jaguar is in the middle of a reinvention. It revealed a new brand identity in November 2024, stopped building its previous petrol models during 2024 and 2025, and plans an all-new electric GT, the Type 01, to be built at Solihull from 2027. Castle Bromwich, Jaguar's long-time car plant, ended vehicle assembly in 2024, and Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria, built the E-Pace and I-Pace until 2024.
Jaguars have been sold in the United States since the late 1940s, when Max Hoffman was the brand's importer, and existing models remain on sale there while the new range is prepared. NHTSA holds recall campaigns and owner complaints for U.S.-market Jaguars, and this page summarises them by model. The notes below explain Jaguar's WMIs, how to read the model year and where to find the VIN.
NHTSA’s files hold 108 vehicle recall campaigns and 2,375 owner complaints for Jaguar vehicles from model years 1995 to 2026, summarised here on 19 model pages. The S-Type has the most complaints (483), followed by the XF (394) and the X-Type (315). Of those complaints, 185 report a crash, 59 a fire, 103 at least one injury and 5 at least one death; the figures count complaints, not people.

Which WMI codes does Jaguar use?
NHTSA's vPIC database lists two WMIs with the make Jaguar, both held by Jaguar Land Rover Limited. SAJ is the passenger-car code; SAD, added in April 2016, covers multipurpose passenger vehicles (MPVs), the U.S. class that includes SUVs. The same company's SAL code carries the Land Rover make instead.

The S prefix places the manufacturer in the United Kingdom. Under ISO 3779 the WMI reflects the country where the manufacturer is headquartered, so a UK code does not by itself tell you which plant built the car. See the WMI code guide.
How do you read the model year from a Jaguar VIN?
Jaguar's own UK ownership pages say the model year is shown by the 10th character of the VIN, and give a table that follows the same sequence used in North America: Y for 2000, 1 to 9 for 2001 to 2009, then A for 2010, L for 2020 and P for 2023. That matches the U.S. requirement in 49 CFR Part 565, and our model-year code guide has the full table. Remember that the code repeats every 30 years, so a B in position 10 could in principle mean 1981 or 2011; the rest of the VIN and the registration settle it.
The check digit is a different matter. U.S.-market Jaguars must carry a calculated check digit in position 9, but European rules made one mandatory only for vehicle types approved from 6 July 2022; before that they mirrored ISO 3779, which does not require one. An older UK- or European-market Jaguar VIN that fails the U.S. check-digit formula is not automatically suspect. The European VIN decoding guide explains the differences.

Jaguar and Land Rover
Jaguar and Land Rover are built by the same company and share its SA-prefixed identifiers. If a VIN starts with SAL it is a Land Rover-make vehicle, even when the paperwork mentions Jaguar Land Rover.
Does a VIN starting with SAD belong to a Jaguar or a Land Rover?
NHTSA's vPIC database lists SAD with the make Jaguar and the vehicle type MPV, the U.S. class that covers SUVs. Land Rover vehicles use SAL. A full decode of the remaining characters confirms the model.
Will a UK-registered Jaguar decode fully here?
Often not. Our decoder uses NHTSA's vPIC data, which is most complete for vehicles built for North America. A UK-market Jaguar will be identified from its WMI, but model and engine details may be missing.
