What NHTSA owner complaints mean

These figures count complaints that vehicle owners and other members of the public have submitted to NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation. NHTSA uses complaints, together with other data, to spot safety issues that may warrant an investigation and to check whether existing recalls go far enough.

  • They are reports, not findings. Each complaint is the submitter's own account. Its presence in the database does not mean NHTSA has confirmed a defect.
  • Counts are not defect rates. The data doesn't say how many vehicles were sold, so a raw count can't tell you what share of vehicles had a problem.
  • Popular models collect more complaints. A model sold in large numbers will usually gather more complaints than a rare one, simply because more people own it.
  • One complaint can name several components. Totals by component can therefore add up to more than the number of complaints.
  • Coverage starts in 1995. NHTSA's complaint file contains complaints received since January 1, 1995.

Use complaint patterns as a prompt for questions: whether a recall covers the issue, whether the vehicle you are considering has had the fix, and what a mechanic finds on inspection. For confirmed safety defects, see the recall list for this model.

    Reported

Power Train › Automatic Transmission › Lever and Linkage › Floor Shift

    Model years 1995–1999

On certain passenger vehicles, the floor shifter ignition-park interlock may fail and allow the shifter to be moved out of the park position with the key removed. An inoperative interlock may also allow the key to be removed when the shifter has not been placed in the park position.

    Consequence:
Either circumstance may result in the vehicle rolling away without warning.
    Remedy:
Dealers will install a new load-limiting push rod into the floor shifter lever of the affected vehicles. Owner notification began on June 14, 2004. Owners should contact DaimlerChrysler at 1-800-853-1403.

Filed by Chrysler (FCA US, LLC)

  3. NHTSA campaign 00V366000

    Reported

    Child Seat

    Model year 2000

Vehicle description: certain passenger vehicles, pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of FMVSS No. 225, "child restraint anchorage systems." Some of the owner's manuals for these vehicles are missing instructions that provide a step-by-step procedure, including diagrams, for properly attaching a child restraint system's tether strap to the tether anchorage.

    Consequence:
In the event of a crash, the child seat may not be properly attached increasing the risk of injury to the child.
    Remedy:
Owners will be provided with an addendum to the owner's manuals.

Filed by Chrysler (FCA US, LLC)

  4. NHTSA campaign 00V196000

    Reported

Service Brakes, Hydraulic › Foundation Components › Hoses, Lines/Piping, and Fittings

    Model year 2000

Vehicle description: passenger vehicles. Some of these vehicles may have been built with an inadequate weld between the right front brake hose block and the stand-off bracket.

    Consequence:
Separation of the stand-off bracket from the block could cause fatigue damage of the right front brake tube and result in a half system brake loss.
    Remedy:
Dealers will add a brake line bracket to the right front brake tube.

Filed by Chrysler (FCA US, LLC)

  5. NHTSA campaign 00V067000

    Reported

Fuel System, Gasoline › Storage › Tank Assembly › Mounting

    Model year 2000

Vehicle description: passenger vehicles. The affected vehicles were built with unpainted fuel tank straps.

The paint provides corrosion protection necessary to ensure the straps do not loosen over time.
    Remedy:
Dealers will replace the fuel tank straps.

Filed by Chrysler (FCA US, LLC)

  6. NHTSA campaign 00V066000

    Reported

    Equipment › Other › Labels

    Model year 2000

Vehicle description: passenger vehicles. The affected vehicles were built with incorrect child lock instruction labels.

    Consequence:
The incorrect labels could cause confusion as to whether the childproof safety lock was activated.
    Remedy:
Owners will be provided with correct labels.

Filed by Chrysler (FCA US, LLC)

  7. NHTSA campaign 99V244000

    Reported

Service Brakes, Hydraulic › Foundation Components › Hoses, Lines/Piping, and Fittings

    Model years 1998–1999

Vehicle description: passenger vehicles. The right rear brake tube can contact the exhaust system clamp and wear a hole in it.

    Consequence:
DaimlerChrysler recall No. 843. If this happens, the tube could leak, reducing the effectiveness of one-half of the diagonally split braking system, and resulting in longer stopping distances.
    Remedy:
Dealers will inspect the brake tubes for visible evidence of contact with the exhaust system clamp. If the tube shows evidence of contact, it will be replaced. If no evidence of contact exists, the tube will be fastened with a clip.

Filed by Chrysler (FCA US, LLC)

  8. NHTSA campaign 98V183000

    Reported

Power Train › Automatic Transmission › Park/Neutral Start Interlock Switch

    Model years 1995–1998

Vehicle description: passenger vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions. The adjustment of the cable connecting the console shifter mechanism to the ignition key can cause a trapped key condition which can result in a low force required to depress the shift button. A combination of applying a mis-adjusted release button with a low force attempt to shift out of park with the key in the locked position, can break the connecting pin in the shifter.

    Consequence:
If this happens, the "ignition-park" interlock system will be nonfunctional.
    Remedy:
Dealers will inspect for proper operation of the system. Any vehicles that are not functional after the inspection will have the shift mechanism and cable replaced with a "self-adjusting" design.

Filed by Chrysler (FCA US, LLC)

  9. NHTSA campaign 98V063000

    Reported

Seat Belts › Front › Anchorage

    Model year 1995

Vehicle description: passenger vehicles. The rear seat belt anchor does not achieve the loading required by FMVSS No. 210, "seat belt assembly anchorages."

    Consequence:
Failure of a seat belt anchor can result in the loss of seat belt protection, which could lead to serious injury or death in the event of a crash.
    Remedy:
Dealers will inspect the rear seat belt outboard anchor floor attachments for proper positioning. If the anchor was improperly oriented, the orientation will be corrected.

Filed by Chrysler (FCA US, LLC)

  10. NHTSA campaign 97V201000

    Reported

Suspension › Front › Control Arm › Lower Ball Joint

    Model years 1995–1997

Vehicle description: passenger vehicles. The lower control arm ball joint can separate due to loss of lubrication.

    Consequence:
Separation of the ball joint could cause a loss of steering control increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
    Remedy:
Dealers will inspect the ball joint end housing cover seal for leakage with a high pressure air tester and the rubber boot will be visually inspected for damage. If the cover seal leaks or the boot is damaged, the lower control arm will be replaced.

Structure › Body › Hood › Hinge and Attachments

    Model years 1996–1997

Vehicle description: passenger vehicles. The secondary hood latch spring can disengage from its retention hole if the hood is slammed shut.

    Consequence:
If this condition occurs simultaneously without engaging the primary latch, the hood would not be restrained increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
    Remedy:
Dealers will replace the secondary hood latch spring with a longer end hook spring.

Filed by Chrysler (FCA US, LLC)

  2. NHTSA campaign 96V075000

The brake master cylinder can leak brake fluid due to a damaged double lip rear piston seal.

    Consequence:
Brake fluid leakage can result in diminished effectiveness of one half of the split brake system. The instrument panel warning light(s) will signal system impairment prior to partial brake system loss.
    Remedy:
Dealers will replace the rear brake master cylindr piston assembly.

Filed by Chrysler (FCA US, LLC)

  3. NHTSA campaign 96V074000

    Reported

Service Brakes, Hydraulic › Antilock/Traction Control/Electronic Limited Slip

    Model years 1995–1996

Corrosion of the ABS hydraulic control unit can cause the solenoid valves to stick in the open position.

    Consequence:
If either front wheel valve sticks, the vehicle would swerve from a straight stop when the brakes are applied.
    Remedy:
Dealers will install a plate and silicone grease injected into the solenoid cavity to eliminate the potential for this condition.

Filed by Chrysler (FCA US, LLC)

  4. NHTSA campaign 96V006000

    Reported

Engine and Engine Cooling › Engine › Gasoline

    Model years 1995–1996

In certain vehicles, the engine cylinder head oil galley plug does not seal properly and engine cylinder head oil is not adequately retained.

How to read this recall list

This list shows every safety recall campaign NHTSA has on file for this make, model and model year. It is not specific to one vehicle: a recall often covers only vehicles built in a certain date range or with a certain part, and many of the vehicles it covers will already have been repaired.

What each recall field means
FieldWhat it tells you
Campaign numberNHTSA's unique ID for the recall, such as 20V771000. Quote it to a dealer or when searching NHTSA's site.
ComponentThe system or part involved, for example air bags, brakes or electrical software.

  • Some recalls carry an NHTSA consumer advisory, “Do Not Drive” or “Park Outside”. Follow it until the repair is done.
  • A single campaign often covers several models or model years, so the same campaign number can appear in more than one list.
