What NHTSA owner complaints mean

These figures count complaints that vehicle owners and other members of the public have submitted to NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation. NHTSA uses complaints, together with other data, to spot safety issues that may warrant an investigation and to check whether existing recalls go far enough.

  • They are reports, not findings. Each complaint is the submitter's own account. Its presence in the database does not mean NHTSA has confirmed a defect.
  • Counts are not defect rates. The data doesn't say how many vehicles were sold, so a raw count can't tell you what share of vehicles had a problem.
  • Popular models collect more complaints. A model sold in large numbers will usually gather more complaints than a rare one, simply because more people own it.
  • One complaint can name several components. Totals by component can therefore add up to more than the number of complaints.
  • Coverage starts in 1995. NHTSA's complaint file contains complaints received since January 1, 1995.

    Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2025-2026 Chrysler Voyager, Chrysler Pacifica, and 2026 Chrysler Voyager Plug-In Hybrid Electric (PHEV) vehicles. The brake pedal position sensor capacitor may be cracked, which can cause a loss of electronic stability control. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 126, "Electronic Stability Control Systems."

    Consequence:
    A loss of electronic stability control increases the risk of a crash.
    Remedy:
    Dealers will inspect and replace brake pedal position sensor, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to mailed September 29, 2026.     Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2026 Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Gladiator, Jeep Compass, Jeep Cherokee, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Jeep Grand Cherokee L, Jeep Grand Wagoneer, Jeep Grand Wagoneer L, Ram Promaster, Ram Promaster EV, Ram 1500, Ram 2500, Chrysler Pacifica Plug-In Hybrid, Chrysler Voyager, and 2026-2027 Chrysler Pacifica and Dodge Charger vehicles. The rearview camera image may fail to display when the vehicle is placed in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility."

    Consequence:
    A rearview camera image that fails to display reduces the driver's view behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
    Remedy:
    Radio software will be updated by a dealer or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed beginning September 2, 2026.     NHTSA “Park Outside” advisory: because of the fire risk, park affected vehicles outside and away from buildings until the recall repair is done.

    Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2020-2022 Pacifica Plug-In Hybrid Electric (PHEV) vehicles. The battery pack may cause a vehicle fire, even when the vehicle is parked with the ignition in the "Off" position.

    Consequence:
    A vehicle fire increases the risk of injury.
    Remedy:
    Owners are advised not to charge their vehicles, and to park outside and away from structures, until their vehicle is repaired. Dealers will update the high voltage battery pack control module software. In addition, dealers will inspect and replace the battery pack assembly, as necessary. All repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed beginning June 23, 2026. Owners may contact FCA US LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403.     Braun Corporation (Braun) is recalling certain 2023-2026 Chrysler Pacifica and Voyager vehicles. The spring inside the front seat harness connector may contact electrical terminals.

    Consequence:
    The unintended connection may prevent the air bags from deploying, increasing the risk of injury during a crash.
    Remedy:
    Dealers will replace the spring, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 16, 2026. Owners may contact Braun's customer service at 1-800-488-0359.

    Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2019 and 2023 Chrysler Pacifica, 2024 Ram 1500, Ram 2500, and 2024-2025 Jeep Wrangler vehicles. Contamination in the central vision processing module or improper programming may cause the rearview camera image not to display. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility."

    Consequence:
    A rearview image that does not display reduces the driver's view behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
    Remedy:
    Dealers will update the central vision processing module software or replace the module, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed beginning July 16, 2026. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is 46D.     Braun Corporation (Braun) is recalling certain 2023-2026 Chrysler Pacifica vehicles. The retractors may not lock, preventing the wheelchair from being properly secured.

    Consequence:
    An unsecured wheelchair can move during transit, increasing the risk of injury.
    Remedy:
    Braun will work with Q'Straint to inspect and replace the retractors as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 16, 2026. Owners may contact Braun's customer service at 1-800-488-0359 or Q'Straint's customer service at 1-800-987-9987.

The right and left side curtain air bags may have insufficient pressure retention from improperly sealed seams. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 226, "Ejection Mitigation."

    Consequence:
    Air bags with insufficient pressure retention increase the risk of ejection and injury during a crash.
    Remedy:
    Dealers will replace the side curtain air bags, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed May 14, 2026. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 800-853-1403. Chrysler's numbers for this recall are 06D, 10D, and 11D. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will be searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning April 2, 2026. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility."

    Consequence:
    A rearview image that does not display reduces the driver's view of what is behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
    Remedy:

    Braun Corporation (Braun) is recalling certain 2024 Chrysler Pacifica and Voyager vehicles. The seat limiter may not have been installed, allowing the seat to move too far forward. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."

    Consequence:
    A seat positioned too close to the air bag can increase the risk of injury during a crash.
    Remedy:
    Dealers will inspect and install a seat limiter as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 17, 2024. Owners may contact Braun customer service at 1-800-488-0359.

An improperly secured connector for the side curtain air bags may prevent the air bags from deploying. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard numbers 214, "Side Impact Protection" and 226, "Ejection Mitigation."

    Consequence:
    An air bag that does not deploy during a crash increases the risk of injury.
    Remedy:

The radio software may prevent the rearview image from displaying. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility."

    Consequence:
    A rearview camera image that does not display decreases the driver's visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.
    Remedy:

    Consequence:

    Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2024 Pacifica and Voyager vehicles. The windshield may not have been properly bonded to the vehicle, allowing it to detach during a crash. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 212, "Windshield Mounting."

    Consequence:
    A windshield that detaches from the vehicle during a crash can increase the risk of injury.
    Remedy:

    Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) (Stellantis) is recalling certain 2023-2024 Ram 1500, Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Wagoneer, Jeep Grand Wagoneer, Chrysler Pacifica, Ram 3500, Ram 3500 cab chassis, Ram 2500, Ram 4500 cab chassis, Ram 5500 cab chassis, 2023 Jeep Gladiator, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Jeep Grand Cherokee L, Ram 3500 Cab Chassis with a GVWR less than 10,000 lbs., and Chrysler Voyager vehicles. The steering column control module may not be welded properly, which can prevent the driver's air bag from deploying in a crash. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."

    Consequence:
    An air bag that does not deploy in a crash can increase the risk of injury.
    Remedy:
    Dealers will inspect and replace the steering column control module, as necessary free of charge. Some owner notification letters were mailed April 11, 2024 through June 20, 2024.     NHTSA “Park Outside” advisory: because of the fire risk, park affected vehicles outside and away from buildings until the recall repair is done.

    Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2023 Chrysler Pacifica plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. An electrical short may occur due to an incorrectly installed 12-volt battery isolator post, resulting in a fire while parked or driving.

    Consequence:
    A fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.
    Remedy:
    Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will correct the isolator to fit the anti-rotation stud, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 28, 2023. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US, LLC's number for this recall is B0A.

    Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2017-2023 Pacifica Plug-In Hybrid Electric vehicles (PHEVs). An internal transmission wiring connector may short circuit, resulting in an unexpected engine shutdown.

    Consequence:
    An unexpected engine shutdown can cause a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash.
    Remedy:
    Dealers will update the Power Inverter Module (PIM) software and, if necessary, update the instrument panel cluster (IPC) and the electronic control module (ECM) software, free of charge. FCA US will notify dealers and begin notifying owners on or about: 03/21/2023 for 2021 model year vehicles, 05/02/2023 for 2019-2020 model year vehicles, and 06/15/2023 for 2017-2018 model year vehicles.     An unsecured seat increases the risk of injury in a crash.
    Remedy:

A software error can cause the rearview camera image to remain displayed after the vehicle has been shifted out of reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rearview Mirrors."

    Consequence:
    The lingering rearview image can distract the driver, increasing the risk of a crash.
    Remedy:

A software error can cause the rearview camera image to remain displayed on the radio after the vehicle has been shifted out of reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rearview Mirrors."

    Consequence:
    The lingering rearview image can distract the driver, increasing the risk of a crash.

    Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the right front knuckle and lower control arm for damage, replacing the components as necessary. The right front lower control arm knuckle pinch bolt will be replaced with a larger-diameter pinch bolt. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began April 26, 2019.     Consequence:
    If the axle shaft disengages from the CV joint, the vehicle will have a loss of drive or allow the vehicle to move while in the "Park" position. Either condition may increase the risk of a crash.
    Remedy:

    If the MPR is engaged unintentionally, the vehicle could roll away striking and injuring a bystander or cause a crash.

    Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2018 Dodge Journey, Charger and Durango, RAM 2500, 3500, 3500 Cab Chassis (more than 10,000lb), 4500 Cab Chassis and 5500 Cab Chassis, Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee and Chrysler 300, 2014-2019 RAM 1500, 2015-2018 Dodge Challenger, 2015-2017 Chrysler 200, 2016-2018 RAM 3500 Cab Chassis (less than 10,000 lb), 2017-2018 Chrysler Pacifica and 2018 Jeep Wrangler vehicles. These vehicles are being recalled to address a defect that could prevent the cruise control system from disengaging. If, when using cruise control, there is a short circuit within the vehicle's wiring, the driver may not be able to shut off the cruise control either by depressing the brake pedal or manually turning the system off once it has been engaged, resulting in either the vehicle maintaining its current speed or possibly accelerating.

    Consequence:
    If the vehicle maintains its speed or accelerates despite attempts to deactivate the cruise control, there would be an increased risk of a crash.
    Remedy:
    Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the software, and perform a software flash on the engine or powertrain control module, free of charge. The recall began June 4, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Note: Owners are advised to stop using cruise control until the software update has been performed. In the event that cruise control cannot be disengaged while driving, owners should firmly and steadily apply the brakes and shift the transmission to neutral, placing the vehicle in park once it has stopped.

These extinguishers may become clogged, preventing the extinguisher from discharging as expected or requiring excessive force to activate the extinguisher. Additionally, in certain models, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury and also render the product inoperable. The affected vans have rear brake lines that might have been crossed during the modification. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 135, "Light Vehicle Brake Systems."

    Consequence:
    The crossed rear brake lines will cause the rear anti-lock brake system to be ineffective, increasing the risk of a crash.
