Rivian VIN decoder
Rivian Automotive is an independent, publicly traded US maker of electric vehicles, with a joint venture with Volkswagen. It builds the R1T pickup, the R1S SUV and electric delivery vans, and started production of the smaller R2 SUV on April 22, 2026. The vans are listed in Rivian's VIN filing under two names, the EDV and the Rivian Commercial Van, each with its own code.

Rivian builds all of its vehicles at one factory in Normal, Illinois. Rivian completed the purchase of that plant in January 2017; it was previously Mitsubishi's US assembly plant, which began as Diamond-Star Motors, a Mitsubishi and Chrysler joint venture, and ended Mitsubishi production in 2015. Rivian is developing a second plant in Georgia, but its model-year 2027 VIN filing lists only Normal as a plant of manufacture.

Which WMI codes appear on Rivian VINs?
Rivian uses two WMIs, one per vehicle type. The R1T pickup and the delivery vans are classed as trucks, and the R1S and R2 as multipurpose passenger vehicles.

vPIC registers both codes to Rivian Automotive LLC in the United States. Rivian's 2027 filing confirms the split: 7FC for the R1T and the delivery vans, 7PD for the R1S and R2.

In Normal, Illinois. Rivian's model-year 2027 VIN filing lists N for Normal as the only plant code, covering the R1T, R1S, R2 and the electric delivery vans.
How can I tell an R1T from an R1S by VIN?
Check the WMI and position 4. The R1T uses WMI 7FC and T in position 4, while the R1S uses 7PD and S. The R2 also uses 7PD, with 2 in position 4.
