All Lamborghinis are built in Sant'Agata Bolognese, near Bologna, where the company has its headquarters. Germany's Federal Motor Transport Authority and NHTSA's vPIC database both list Lamborghini's codes under that Italian company, including an unusual six-character identifier explained below.
Lamborghini is sold in the United States, and NHTSA holds recall campaigns for U.S.-market cars, filed under the name Automobili Lamborghini; examples are 24V348000, a hood-latch recall, and 25V903000, a rear-camera recall, both covering the 2024 Urus. Which WMI codes does Lamborghini use?
NHTSA's vPIC database lists three identifiers for Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A. Two are ordinary three-character WMIs: ZHW for passenger cars and ZPB, added in August 2018, for multipurpose passenger vehicles (MPVs), the U.S. class that covers SUVs. The third is a six-character identifier made of ZA9 in positions 1 to 3 and A12 in positions 12 to 14.

What does the 9 in a ZA9 Lamborghini VIN mean?
A 9 in position 3 marks a six-character manufacturer identifier, the format used by low-volume makers. 49 CFR 565.15 states that a 9 in position 3 means the identifier continues in positions 12 to 14, and both ISO 3779 and the EU's current VIN rules (Regulation 2021/535) have those three positions assigned by a national body when a manufacturer builds fewer than 500 vehicles a year. For a ZA9 VIN, the identifier matches the Lamborghini entry in vPIC only when positions 12 to 14 read A12, which leaves positions 15 to 17 for the production number. Why might a European Lamborghini VIN fail a check-digit test?
Cars built for the U.S. follow 49 CFR Part 565, which places a check digit in position 9 and a model-year code in position 10. Cars built for Europe before July 2022 came under rules that mirrored ISO 3779, where positions 4 to 9 are the manufacturer's choice and no check digit is required; the EU has required one for new vehicle types since 6 July 2022, though a year code is still optional. Is a Lamborghini VIN starting with ZA9 genuine?
It can be. NHTSA's vPIC database lists ZA9 combined with A12 in positions 12 to 14 as an identifier of Automobili Lamborghini. If positions 12 to 14 show something other than A12, the VIN does not match that Lamborghini entry and needs a closer look.
Can I decode a Lamborghini sold new in Europe?
Yes, with limits. Our decoder uses NHTSA's vPIC data, which is most complete for North American vehicles. The WMI will identify Lamborghini, but model and engine fields for a European-market car may be empty.
