What NHTSA owner complaints mean

These figures count complaints that vehicle owners and other members of the public have submitted to NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation. NHTSA uses complaints, together with other data, to spot safety issues that may warrant an investigation and to check whether existing recalls go far enough.

  • They are reports, not findings. Each complaint is the submitter's own account. Its presence in the database does not mean NHTSA has confirmed a defect.
  • Counts are not defect rates. The data doesn't say how many vehicles were sold, so a raw count can't tell you what share of vehicles had a problem.
  • Popular models collect more complaints. A model sold in large numbers will usually gather more complaints than a rare one, simply because more people own it.
  • One complaint can name several components. Totals by component can therefore add up to more than the number of complaints.
  • Coverage starts in 1995. NHTSA's complaint file contains complaints received since January 1, 1995.

Use complaint patterns as a prompt for questions: whether a recall covers the issue, whether the vehicle you are considering has had the fix, and what a mechanic finds on inspection. For confirmed safety defects, see the recall list for this model.

  1. NHTSA campaign 00V335000

    Reported

    Service Brakes, Air

    Model year 1998

Vehicle description: medium duty tandem rear axle trucks with ABS. These vehicles fail to comply with FMVSS No. 121, "air brake systems." The air brake system was plumbed so that complete air reservoir isolation was not provided. Some vehicles were built with an air line from the system ECU relay valve module tee fitting, incorrectly connected to the system supply tank, rather than the system auxiliary primary tank.

    Consequence:
A leakage or failure can cause a pressure loss in the secondary tank resulting in the draining of the primary tank also, and thus a complete loss of vehicle system air pressure, diminishing brake effectiveness, and increasing the risk of a crash.
    Remedy:
Dealers will inspect the vehicle to determine whether the vehicle has the incorrectly routed air line. Those with the condition will be correctly plumbed and the air brake system tested to verify proper reservoir isolation.

  2. NHTSA campaign 99V050000

    Reported

    Service Brakes, Air

    Model years 1997–1998

Vehicle description: heavy duty trucks equipped with optional wabco air dryer. The air brake system was plumbed so that the systems did not provide air reservoir isolation. This does not comply with the requirements of FMVSS No. 121, "air brake systems."

    Consequence:
The air brake reservoir pressure could be depleted, activating the emergency spring brake. With the emergency spring brake deployed, the vehicle would stop and could not be moved until the brake air system was repaired.
    Remedy:
Dealers will repair the air line plumbing to install a check valve.

  3. NHTSA campaign 97V041000

    Reported

Fuel System, Gasoline › Delivery › Hoses, Lines/Piping, and Fittings

    Model year 1997

Vehicle description: heavy duty trucks equipped with FD1060 and FD1460 diesel engines and optional manual fuel shutoff systems. The hand control of the manual fuel shutoff system, mounted on the vehicle's instrument panel, is labeled with the words "shutoff fuel lock", and these words are not illuminated other than by the cab's interior lights. This does not comply with the requirements of FMVSS No. 101, "controls and displays."

    Consequence:
Due to the lack of illumination and incomplete labeling of the manual fuel shutoff system, a driver may not identify the hand control to shut off fuel supply to the engine.
    Remedy:
Dealers will replace the manual fuel shutoff system with the standard automatic key-off fuel control system.

    Filed by Ford Motor Company

  4. NHTSA campaign 96V200000

    Reported

Service Brakes, Air › Supply › Low Pressure Warning › Switch

    Model years 1996–1997

The air brake system was manufactured having air brake pressure release times of approximately 1.5 seconds. This does not comply with the requirements of FMVSS No. 121, "air brake systems."

    Consequence:
This condition can result in slight trailer brake drag and tire scuffing increasing the risk of a vehicle accident.
    Remedy:
Dealers will install a quick release valve in the air pressure release systems.

How to read this recall list

This list shows every safety recall campaign NHTSA has on file for this make, model and model year. It is not specific to one vehicle: a recall often covers only vehicles built in a certain date range or with a certain part, and many of the vehicles it covers will already have been repaired.
