What NHTSA owner complaints mean

These figures count complaints that vehicle owners and other members of the public have submitted to NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation. NHTSA uses complaints, together with other data, to spot safety issues that may warrant an investigation and to check whether existing recalls go far enough.

  • They are reports, not findings. Each complaint is the submitter's own account. Its presence in the database does not mean NHTSA has confirmed a defect.
  • Counts are not defect rates. The data doesn't say how many vehicles were sold, so a raw count can't tell you what share of vehicles had a problem.
  • Popular models collect more complaints. A model sold in large numbers will usually gather more complaints than a rare one, simply because more people own it.
  • One complaint can name several components. Totals by component can therefore add up to more than the number of complaints.
  • Coverage starts in 1995. NHTSA's complaint file contains complaints received since January 1, 1995.

Use complaint patterns as a prompt for questions: whether a recall covers the issue, whether the vehicle you are considering has had the fix, and what a mechanic finds on inspection. For confirmed safety defects, see the recall list for this model.

    Reported

Fuel System, Gasoline › Delivery › Fuel Pump

    Model year 2007

American Suzuki is recalling certain model year 2007 XL-7 vehicles originally sold or currently registered in Arizona, California, Nevada, and Texas; and manufactured June 13, 2006, through December 22, 2006. Some of these vehicles have a condition in which the plastic supply or return port on the fuel pump module may crack, which could cause a fuel leak.

    Consequence:
Fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source may result in a fire.
    Remedy:
American Suzuki will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump module, free of charge. An interim letter was mailed on March 7, 2013. Owners may contact American Suzuki Customer Relations at 1-800-934-0934.

  2. NHTSA campaign 10V250000

    Reported

Steering › Hydraulic Power Assist › Pump

    Model years 2005–2006

Suzuki is recalling certain model year model year 2006 grand vitara and model year 2005-2006 XL-7 vehicles. The tension adjuster pulley for the drive belt that operates the power steering pump and air conditioner compressor (if equipped) has an outer portion that is made of plastic. Repeated heat stress can cause the plastic material to deteriorate and pieces of the pulley can break off.

    Consequence:
Broken pieces of the pulley can get caught between the pulley and the drive belt, causing the drive belt to come off and resulting in the driver needing increased effort to steer the vehicle increasing the risk of a crash.
    Remedy:
Dealers will replace the power steering pump drive belt tension adjuster pulley free of charge. The safety recall began on June 28, 2010. Owners may contact Suzuki at 1-800-934-0934.

  3. NHTSA campaign 07V277000

    Reported

    Visibility › Windshield

    Model year 2007

Certain vehicles fail to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 212, "windshield mounting." An incorrect primer may have been used when installing the windshield.

    Consequence:
In the event of a crash, the windshield may not be retained to the extent required by the standard, increasing the risk of personal injuries to the vehicle occupants.
    Remedy:
Dealers will inspect and replace any glass (windshield, liftgate glass, or the side stationary glass) that was installed incorrectly. The recall began on July 10, 2007. Owners may contact Suzuki at 1-800-934-0934.

  4. NHTSA campaign 05V452000

    Reported

Service Brakes, Hydraulic › Foundation Components › Disc › Rotor

    Model years 2001–2006

On certain sport utility vehicles equipped with 16-inch wheels, the front brake discs may break under severe driving conditions. The breakage can occur in conditions where the vehicle is driven on a regular basis on extremely steep paved down-slopes while continuously applying the brakes.

    Consequence:
The front brakes may become inoperative and the vehicle may pull to one side. This could result in a crash without prior warning.
    Remedy:
Dealers will replace the front brake discs on these vehicles. The recall began on November 10, 2005. These vehicles are located on st. thomas island (Virgin Islands). Owners may contact Suzuki del caribe at 787-622-0600.

Filed by Suzuki Motor USA, LLC

  5. NHTSA campaign 03V512000

    Reported

    Vehicle Speed Control › Cables

    Model years 2001–2004

On certain sport utility vehicles, the accelerator cable casing cap that is attached to the vehicle firewall can crack due to extended exposure to forces from the accelerator cable and insufficient long-term durability of the plastic casing cap. If the casing cap becomes cracked, movement of the inner accelerator cable through the cap can cause the inner accelerator cable to become frayed.

    Consequence:
If the inner accelerator cable becomes frayed, it can stick during vehicle operation. In the case where an accelerator cable sticks, the driver could have difficulty controlling vehicle speed, which could result in a crash.
    Remedy:
Dealers will replace the accelerator cable, which includes the plastic casing cap. Owner notification began on January 5, 2004. Owners should contact Suzuki at 1-800-934-0934.

How to read this recall list

This list shows every safety recall campaign NHTSA has on file for this make, model and model year. It is not specific to one vehicle: a recall often covers only vehicles built in a certain date range or with a certain part, and many of the vehicles it covers will already have been repaired.

What each recall field means
What each recall field means
FieldWhat it tells you
Campaign numberNHTSA's unique ID for the recall, such as 20V771000. Quote it to a dealer or when searching NHTSA's site.
ComponentThe system or part involved, for example air bags, brakes or electrical software.
SummaryWhat the defect or non-compliance is and which vehicles are covered.
ConsequenceThe safety risk if the problem isn't fixed.
RemedyWhat the manufacturer will do, such as a repair, replacement or software update, and whether it is free.
  • Some recalls carry an NHTSA consumer advisory, “Do Not Drive” or “Park Outside”. Follow it until the repair is done.
  • A single campaign often covers several models or model years, so the same campaign number can appear in more than one list.
